For the most vivid aurora color, build a tight nest of dry kindling around the firestarter and light it in still or gently moving air. Let the firestarter burn steadily so the colored flame has time to establish before larger logs are added. Dry, seasoned wood and good airflow produce the cleanest, brightest color — damp wood or a smothered fire will mute the effect.
