FAQ
Everything you need to know about Aurora Lites colored firestarters — from how they work to how to get the most vivid flame.
Can you roast marshmallows or cook over colored flames?
No. Colored flames come from metal salts — Aurora Lites uses copper compounds for its blue and green — and those should never touch food. Roast your marshmallows and cook first, then add color once the food is put away. The same goes for fire color changing packets in our s'mores and cocoa gift crates: treats first, color second. Keep fire starters and color packets away from children and pets, and never open or eat them.
View as pageWhat is the difference between a color fire starter and fire color changing packets?
Fire color changing packets are tossed, unopened, into a fire that is already burning to tint the flames. An Aurora Lites color fire starter does two jobs: it lights your fire and colors the flame blue and green while it gets going. Use a color fire starter to start the fire with color from the first minute, and color packets if you want to add color to a fire later in the evening.
View as pageWhat are Aurora Lites colored firestarters?
Aurora Lites are wax-based firestarters that light fast, hold a steady flame long enough to catch your kindling, and release a vivid blue and green colored flame as they burn. They are handmade in Concrete, Washington for campfires, fire pits, and fireplaces — a practical, reliable firestarter with the added magic of an aurora-colored flame.
View as pageHow do Aurora Lites work?
Place an Aurora Lites firestarter under your kindling and light it with a match or lighter. The starter burns hot and steadily, giving your fire the time it needs to catch. As it burns, copper-based metal salts release energy as colored light — the same electric blue and green you see in the northern lights — so your flame takes on an aurora glow before the wood takes over.
View as pageAre colored firestarters safe?
Yes. Aurora Lites are designed for recreational use in campfires, fire pits, and fireplaces when used as directed. The colored flame is a visual effect — your fire burns exactly as it normally would, just with a stunning aurora twist. Always use them outdoors or in a well-ventilated fireplace, keep children and pets at a safe distance, never leave a fire unattended, and follow local fire regulations.
View as pageHow long does the colored flame last?
The colored flame holds through the burn of the firestarter, giving you a sustained, vivid aurora effect rather than a brief flash. Once your wood catches and the fire builds, the color gradually blends into the natural flame. For the longest-lasting color, build a tight nest of dry kindling around the firestarter so it burns steadily before the larger logs take over.
View as pageCan I use Aurora Lites in an indoor fireplace?
Yes — Aurora Lites are safe for indoor fireplaces when used as directed in a well-ventilated hearth with a working chimney. They are a visual product, not a cooking fuel, so never use them in cooking fires or enclosed spaces without ventilation. As with any fire, keep the screen closed, supervise the burn, and follow your fireplace manufacturer's guidelines.
View as pageWhere are Aurora Lites made?
Aurora Lites are handmade in Concrete, Washington — a small town in the Cascade foothills where the Skagit River meets the mountains. Every batch is crafted with quality in mind to produce consistent, vibrant color without excessive smoke. When you buy Aurora Lites, you are supporting a Pacific Northwest maker who cares about the product and the community.
View as pageDo Aurora Lites work with any type of wood?
Aurora Lites work with all common fire woods — hardwoods like oak and maple, and softwoods like pine and cedar. The firestarter's job is to get your kindling lit reliably; the wood you choose simply carries the fire from there. For the best results, use dry, seasoned wood and build a foundation of small kindling so airflow can reach the flame.
View as pageCan I order Aurora Lites in bulk or wholesale?
Yes. We work with independent shops, outdoor retailers, camp hosts, makers, and event teams who want to bring colorful fires to more people. View as pageWhat colors do Aurora Lites currently come in?
Our signature Aurora Lites firestarter burns an electric blue and green aurora flame, powered by copper-based chemistry. We also offer the Autumn Fire firestarter, which burns a warm red-to-orange flame. Both share the same fast-lighting, wind-resistant, damp-climate-friendly performance — you simply choose the color that fits the moment.
View as pageHow do I get the most vivid color from Aurora Lites?
For the most vivid aurora color, build a tight nest of dry kindling around the firestarter and light it in still or gently moving air. Let the firestarter burn steadily so the colored flame has time to establish before larger logs are added. Dry, seasoned wood and good airflow produce the cleanest, brightest color — damp wood or a smothered fire will mute the effect.
