How to Use Aurora Lites in Different Weather Conditions

The Pacific Northwest doesn't always cooperate with campfire plans. Wet wood, gusting wind, and biting cold are part of life here — and exactly the conditions Aurora Lites are engineered to handle. With the right technique, you can get a vivid blue and green flame even when the weather is working against you.

In wet and humid conditions, moisture is your biggest enemy. Start by gathering the driest kindling you can find — look for dead branches still attached to standing trees rather than wood on the ground, which soaks up moisture from the soil. Build a small platform of sticks to keep your firestarter off the damp ground, then place the Aurora Lites firestarter underneath your kindling so its flame has shelter while it establishes. Because Aurora Lites are wax-based, they resist humidity far better than paper or natural tinder, giving your damp wood time to catch.

In windy conditions, wind protection is everything. Build your fire in a sheltered spot — behind a rock, a log, or a natural depression in the terrain. Arrange your kindling in a teepee or log-cabin structure that blocks the wind from the firestarter while still allowing airflow. Place the Aurora Lites firestarter on the leeward side and light it from the downwind edge so the flame is pushed into your kindling rather than blown away from it. Aurora Lites hold a steady flame even in gusts that would snuff out a match.

In cold and freezing weather, cold air is denser and fires can be sluggish to start. Give your fire a little extra help by using slightly more kindling than you would in summer, and make sure your wood is dry — cold wood that's also damp is the hardest combination. Aurora Lites burn hot enough to overcome cold starts, and the colored flame is especially striking against a frosty winter landscape. Keep your firestarters in an inside pocket close to your body before use so they're not ice-cold when you light them.

A few universal tips apply in any weather: always have enough kindling staged before you light, give the firestarter room to breathe, and be patient — let the colored flame establish before piling on larger logs. Rushing kills more fires than weather ever does.
