Best Practices for Storing Firestarters

A firestarter is only useful if it works when you reach for it — and that usually means cold, dark, or damp conditions when you least want a surprise. Proper storage keeps Aurora Lites ready to light instantly, season after season.

Keep them cool and dry. The single most important rule is to store firestarters in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Wax-based firestarters like Aurora Lites can soften or melt in extreme heat, which changes how they burn. A garage shelf, a storage bin in a shed, or a closet inside your home all work well. Avoid leaving them in a hot car or a south-facing window.

Use a sealed container. A resealable bag, a plastic storage tub, or a dedicated tin keeps moisture and dust out. Even though Aurora Lites resist humidity better than paper or natural tinder, prolonged exposure to damp air can affect performance over time. A sealed container is cheap insurance — and it keeps your firestarters together so they're easy to grab on the way out the door.

Keep them away from flame and heat. Store firestarters well away from stoves, heaters, water heaters, and any open flame. This is basic fire safety: the product is designed to ignite easily, so treat it with the respect that deserves. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.

Organize by use. Keep a small stash in your camping bin or backpack so it's always packed, a few in your emergency kit at home, and a couple in your vehicle kit for winter driving. When you use one, replace it right away so your kits stay complete. A quick inventory before each season ensures you're never caught short.

Watch for signs of age. Aurora Lites have a long shelf life when stored properly, but check your stash occasionally. If a firestarter feels brittle, crumbly, or has a strong waxy smell that wasn't there before, it may have been exposed to heat or moisture — test one before relying on the rest. A firestarter that lights and burns normally in a controlled test is fine to keep.

Label your containers. If you store firestarters in opaque bins, a simple label saves you digging through gear in the dark. Note the contents and the date you stocked them so you can rotate older stock first.

With these habits, your Aurora Lites will be as reliable on the fifth year as on the first. Handmade in Concrete, Washington, and built to be ready whenever the moment — or the weather — calls for a fire.
