BURN TIME & PERFORMANCE

PERFORMANCE

What to expect from your Aurora Lites firestarter — and how to get the most out of every one.

How Long Does an Aurora Lites Firestarter Burn?

A single Aurora Lites firestarter burns for approximately 8–12 minutes under normal conditions. This is intentionally long — enough to catch dry kindling reliably and even coax slightly damp wood into burning. The colored flame is most intense in the first 3–5 minutes, transitioning to a strong steady burn through the remainder.

Colored Flame Duration

The vivid blue and green aurora colors appear immediately on ignition and remain most intense for the first 3–5 minutes. After that, the colored effect continues at a lower intensity as the firestarter burns through. For maximum color impact, use Aurora Lites in low-light conditions — dusk, evening, or night — where the hues really pop against the dark.

Factors That Affect Burn Time

Wind is the biggest variable. A steady breeze can shorten burn time by accelerating combustion. If you're lighting in a windy spot, shield the firestarter with your hand, a rock, or your fire structure while it establishes. Humidity has less effect than you might expect — Aurora Lites are formulated to perform in the damp Pacific Northwest climate. Altitude has minimal impact.

How Many Do You Need?

For a standard campfire or fire pit with dry wood, one Aurora Lites firestarter is sufficient. For wet or green wood, or a fire pit with poor airflow, use two — place them side by side under your kindling for a broader, hotter start. For a long-burning bonfire or large fire pit, start with one and add a second after 5 minutes if needed.

Performance in Cold Weather

Aurora Lites perform well in cold temperatures — the chemical reaction that produces color and heat is not significantly affected by cold air. In sub-freezing conditions, keep your firestarters in a pocket or bag close to your body before use to bring them to ambient temperature. Cold firestarters still light reliably; they may just take an extra second on the initial strike.
