How long Aurora Lites last, what affects their shelf life, and how to keep them ready for years.

How Long Do Aurora Lites Last?

Aurora Lites firestarters are stable chemical composites with no strict expiration date. Stored properly — cool, dry, and sealed — they perform at full strength for roughly 2 years from manufacture, and remain usable well beyond that. Unlike perishable goods, they do not "spoil"; they simply lose a little ignition ease if exposed to moisture or heat over long periods.

What Shortens Shelf Life

Moisture is the number one enemy. A firestarter left in a humid environment or an unsealed pack will absorb water over time and become harder to light. Heat and direct sunlight can slowly degrade the binding compounds and reduce burn quality. Physical crushing can break the structure and expose more surface area to air and humidity. Keep them sealed, cool, and protected.

Ideal Storage Conditions

Store Aurora Lites in a sealed zip-lock bag or airtight container in a cool, dry place — a gear bin, garage shelf, or drawer. Aim for temperatures between roughly 40°F and 80°F and low humidity. Avoid hot car interiors in summer and freezing-and-thawing cycles in unheated sheds. Original packaging is fine for short-term storage; add a sealed bag for long-term.

Signs a Firestarter Is Past Its Prime

A fresh Aurora Lites firestarter lights quickly and burns with vivid color. One that has degraded may take an extra second to catch, burn slightly less vividly, or leave more residue. None of these are dangerous — the firestarter is still usable. If a piece feels damp or crumbles easily, dry it in a warm spot for an hour and test-light one before relying on it in the field.

Rotating Your Stock

For emergency kits that sit unused for long stretches, label your firestarters with the purchase date and rotate them every couple of years — use the older ones on casual trips and refresh the kit with fresh stock. For everyday campers who go through packs regularly, shelf life is rarely a concern. Either way, a sealed bag and a dry storage spot are all you need.
