The Golden Rule: Keep Them Dry
The single most important thing for storing firestarters is keeping them away from moisture. A firestarter that gets wet before use will be harder to light and may produce a weaker flame. Store Aurora Lites in a sealed zip-lock bag, a waterproof container, or their original packaging until you're ready to use them.
At Home Storage
At home, store Aurora Lites in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. A garage shelf, a camping gear bin, or a kitchen drawer all work well. Keep them away from stoves, furnaces, and any open flame. Store away from children and pets. There is no strict expiration date, but firestarters stored in good conditions will perform best within 2 years of manufacture.
In the Field: Camping and Backpacking
When camping, keep your Aurora Lites in a waterproof bag inside your pack. A small dry bag or a zip-lock inside a stuff sack is ideal. If you're car camping, a sealed plastic bin in your vehicle is perfect. Avoid leaving them loose in an open pack where rain or dew can reach them overnight.
Storing Partially Used Packs
If you've opened a pack and have leftover firestarters, seal the remaining pieces in a zip-lock bag immediately. Exposure to air and humidity over time can reduce performance. A sealed bag keeps them ready for your next outing. Label the bag with the date so you know how long they've been stored.
What NOT to Do
Never store firestarters near fuel, propane, or other flammables — they are combustible and should be treated accordingly. Don't store them in direct sunlight in a hot car for extended periods. Avoid crushing or compressing them heavily, which can affect their structure. And never store them in a wet tent pocket or a damp cooler bag.
