HOW TO START A FIRE IN EXTREME CONDITIONS

Back to Learning Center
EMERGENCY

Advanced techniques for high wind, heavy rain, snow, and sub-zero temperatures.

Extreme Means Preparation

Starting a fire in extreme conditions is less about a clever trick and more about doing the basics flawlessly. Before you strike a flame, gather two to three times more tinder and kindling than you think you need, build your structure fully, and pick the most sheltered spot available. Aurora Lites long burn time gives you the window to get kindling established when conditions are fighting you.

High Wind

Wind accelerates combustion and can blow out a fragile new flame. Build your fire in a wind shadow — behind a rock, log, or snow wall — and use your body as an extra shield while lighting. A log cabin structure with tight walls blocks wind better than an open teepee. Light the Aurora Lites firestarter from the downwind side and cup your hands around it until the kindling catches.

Heavy Rain

In rain, everything on the ground is wet. Gather dry tinder from sheltered spots — under fallen logs, beneath dense evergreen boughs, or the dry interior of split standing dead wood. Build your fire on a bed of bark or a flat rock to lift it off wet ground. Shield the structure with your body and a jacket while the Aurora Lites firestarter establishes; its 8–12 minute burn dries marginal kindling as it works.

Snow and Sub-Zero Cold

Cold itself does not stop Aurora Lites from lighting, but a fire built directly on snow will melt through and collapse. Build a platform of green logs or flat stones on top of the snow, then build your fire on that. Keep firestarters in an inside pocket before use so they are at body temperature. Collect dry tinder from standing dead wood — anything touching the snow is wet.

When You Only Get One Chance

In a true emergency you may have a single, damp match or one flick of a lighter. Build the complete fire structure first, place the Aurora Lites firestarter at the base, and protect it from wind and rain. Strike your ignition at the most sheltered edge of the firestarter and immediately shield the flame. The firestarter will carry the flame long enough to catch kindling even from a single brief spark.
